Gate valves are heavy-duty components designed for total isolation using a wedge or blade that moves perpendicular to the flow path. The defining characteristic of this group is the absence of any mechanical protrusion within the flow when fully open; this prevents turbulence and minimizes the risk of water hammer. While Sluice/Gate Valves are masters of bi-directional sealing in clean water and steam lines, Knife Gate Valves use a "guillotine effect" to slice through fibrous, viscous, or slurry media.
