Globe Valve Working Principle
Main Components:
Body: The body, the basic structure of the globe valve, houses the fluid line. The GG-25 cast iron material used in ORFA's globe valves is designed to withstand high pressures and temperatures.
Valve (Disc): The moving part within the valve, the element that allows fluid to flow through or stop it. Made of AISI 420 stainless steel, the disc is resistant to high temperatures and has a long lifespan. The disc moves vertically up or down.
Seat (Seating Surface): The surface where the disc closes and settles. Manufactured from AISI 420 stainless steel, the seat provides a durable and reliable structure to ensure fluid tightness.
Working Mechanism:
Globe valves are primarily designed to regulate fluid flow and, when necessary, completely shut off the flow. When the valve is fully closed, the valve disc is completely seated against the metal seating surface. This completely blocks fluid flow, ensuring a perfect seal. When the valve is opened, the disc moves upward and separates from the seating surface. This movement allows fluid to pass through the valve. The further the disc moves upward, the wider the area through which fluid flows, increasing the flow rate. Thus, when the valve is fully open, it allows maximum flow. When fully closed, the flow is completely stopped.
Flow and Pressure Control:
Globe valves can have higher pressure losses than other valves because the fluid direction changes several times along its path through the body. After entering the valve body, the flow must pass through the gap between the valve stem and seat. This causes the flow to change direction rather than follow a straight line, increasing pressure loss. However, this feature makes globe valves an ideal choice, especially for applications requiring precise flow control.
Sealing:
Globe valves stand out with their ability to allow bi-directional flow and their robust sealing performance. Internal sealing is achieved through excellent contact between the disc and the seating surface. Sealing against the atmosphere is achieved using either a wire-mesh graphite gasket or a pure graphite gasket. Furthermore, the shaft seal is maintained by a stuffing box, minimizing the risk of external leakage.
