Expansion Tank Basic Structure and Working Principle
Horizontal expansion tanks are divided into two main compartments: a water chamber and a gas chamber. A flexible membrane separates these two compartments. The membrane prevents water from entering the gas chamber and ensures proper system operation.
Water Room:
The water chamber is the compartment that connects the expansion tank to the system. This chamber is where the volume of the water in the system changes. When heated, water expands, and this expanded water enters the expansion tank's water chamber. When cooled, the water volume decreases, and the water in the chamber returns to the system.
Gas chamber:
The gas chamber is typically filled with air or another gas, and the correct pressure is set via a filling valve. The gas in this chamber resists changes in water volume through the membrane. The gas pressure is critical for balancing changes in the system's water volume.
Pressure Balancing Mechanism
The operating principle of the expansion tank is based on the physical properties of water and gas. When the system heats, the water expands and enters the water chamber. This forces the membrane against the gas chamber, compressing the gas. The compression of the gas creates a backpressure to balance the pressure increase in the system. This backpressure ensures safe system operation and prevents overpressure.
During cooling, the water volume decreases, and the water in the water chamber returns to the system. As this occurs, the pressure in the gas chamber decreases, pushing the membrane toward the water chamber, thus allowing the water to return to the system. This mechanism effectively balances pressure changes, contributing to stable system operation.
Expansion Tank Maintenance and Control
Horizontal expansion tanks require regular maintenance and inspection to ensure proper operation. The pressure in the tank's gas chamber should be checked regularly and adjusted as necessary. Additionally, the condition of the expansion tank and its membrane should be checked periodically for wear or damage.
Gas Pressure Control: The tank's pre-pressure should be adjusted according to the system's specifications and checked regularly. Insufficient air pressure reduces tank function and shortens the membrane's life.
Membrane Inspection: The membrane is one of the most critical components of a tank. When worn or damaged, the tank's performance deteriorates. Therefore, the condition of the membrane should be checked regularly and replaced if necessary.
Uses and Benefits of Horizontal Type Expansion Tanks
In Heating and Heating Systems: The expansion tank's function in a heating system is to absorb the excess pressure created in the system by the increased volume of heating water heated by the combi boiler or boiler, through its internal membrane. This means that the flexible membrane inside the tank inflates like a balloon when necessary, absorbing the excess pressure and reducing it to normal levels.
