Centrifugal Pump Operation Step by Step:
Suction: Liquid entering the pump through the suction port is drawn into the center of the impeller. This suction process is usually accomplished with the help of atmospheric pressure. During suction, the pump must be continuously supplied with liquid.
Acceleration: The pump's rotating impeller accelerates the liquid by throwing it outward. This acceleration is caused by centrifugal force, and the liquid gains kinetic energy as it moves outward through the impeller.
Pressure Generation: When the liquid reaches the outer edge of the impeller, this kinetic energy is converted into pressure energy. A diffuser, or spiral casing, placed around the circumference of the impeller controls the flow of the liquid and increases the pressure.
Discharge: Liquid is forced to the outlet port by pressure energy and exits the pump to be delivered to the rest of the system. In this stage, the liquid exits the pump at a higher pressure than the lower pressure it had entering the pump.
