Basic Working Mechanism of Solenoid Valves
Normally Closed (NC) Solenoid Valve: In this type of valve, when there is no electrical power, the valve is closed, preventing fluid flow. The core inside the valve closes the orifice, preventing flow. When electrical power is applied, the solenoid coil acts like an electromagnet, creating a magnetic field. This magnetic field pulls the core upward, opening the orifice and allowing fluid flow. When the current is removed, the core returns to its original position, and the valve closes.
Direct-Acting Solenoid Valve: Direct-acting solenoid valves are preferred in smaller diameter and lower-pressure systems. In these valves, the core directly opens or closes the orifice when electrical energy is applied. Unlike pilot-operated valves, these valves are not dependent on fluid pressure and operate directly through mechanical action. When the coil is energized, the core opens the orifice, allowing flow; when the energy is removed, the core closes the orifice again, stopping flow.
