A surge tank is a device used to minimize heat loss during the return of the fluid used in installations from the system to the boiler. This temperature difference can cause thermal stress in the boiler, reducing its lifespan. The primary function of the surge tank is to maintain thermal equilibrium by mixing the cooled fluid from the system with the hot water from the boiler. This minimizes thermal stress and ensures efficient system operation.

Balance Cup Selection
The selection should be based on the maximum heating water flow rate in the heating system. The hydraulic surge tank should be sized to ensure a maximum water flow of 0.2 m/s. The primary pump should be selected to overcome the resistances of the boiler and the primary side piping. The secondary pump should be selected to overcome the resistances of the secondary side piping. All secondary heating circuits should have a separate pump. The resistance of the surge tank is negligible.
The flow temperature is measured by a flow temperature sensor located in a sensor housing near the secondary side flow, above the hydraulic surge tank. A drain valve is recommended for proper and efficient system operation.
